Advantage
The LCE principle brings many advantages. Some of the most important ones are:
- simple mechanical construction
- optimal-regime-only operation
- higher power density and thermodynamic efficiency in comparison to a standard motor-generator
- option to use either combustion or diesel type
- compression ratio adjustable by a simple change in control software
- use of various fuels (hydrogen, gas, LPG, NG, bio gas, methyl alcohol, diesel, bio diesel, …)
- possibility of precise expansion phase control through variable electric supply
Disadvantage
Every system has its cons; here some of the important ones:
- need for a sophisticated control system
- every faulty thermodynamic cycle stops the motor - can be resolved by a control system
- higher vibration during operation - can be resolved by multiple cylinders or by shock absorbers
